If you google ‘best banh mi in Hoi An’ the first few searches that come up will be Bánh Mì Phượng. This stall was visited by Anthony Bourdain and featured on his TV show No Reservations. As of today (Jan 2018) it has a 4.5-star rating on trip advisor with nearly 2200 reviews.
The photo above was taken back in 2014 when I first visited Hoi An. It was definitely one of the best banh mi’s I had ever tasted. Unfortunately on my second trip there in late 2017, it wasn’t as I remembered. In fact, our local uber driver from Da Nang told us that every time he visits Hoi An he would drop by this stall to get a Banh Mi, but was also disappointed by the rolls that day.
Either the recipe of the bread roll had changed or we were extremely unlucky to have gotten day-old bread. One of the most notable things about the bread rolls here that I remembered from my earlier trip was the crispy yet light crust and fluffy inside meat. This time round, all 5 rolls that we ordered were stale. Not only was the bread not on par, but the meat in my friends crispy roast pork roll was quite dry and inedible.
I’m not sure if we were just extremely unlucky that day or the quality of the bread rolls there have drastically decreased but it definitely was not the best Banh Mi in Hoi An for me on that day!
Chances are I came on an off day but if I was to go back to Hoi An next time, I would probably try another stall which is also quite popular with tourists and locals alike. It is a tiny stall run by an old lady over 80 years old with reviews that are just as good as Banh Mi Phuong on trip advisor (Address below)
